Car Issues, Arm Waggle and Juicing For Thought

The recent talk about town is the brunette woman diving around in a dirty Dodge Caravan waving to anyone who will wave back.

Becoming the local gossip in town was never my intention. I came by my nickname “Waving Wendy” honestly due to the circumstances of the previous six weeks.

As I shared in the last installment of A Word with Wendy, our attempt to get away for a Smith family vacation ended with major car issues.

02 Plyometrics

On our way up to Sardine Lake, our minivan broke down in Auburn. When I say broke down I mean smoke billowing, engine clanking and a complete loss of control of the accelerator.

The instrument panel lit up like a Christmas tree warning me that I'd lost my engine and battery, and showed a few other funny little digital pictures that I was unable to decipher.

I suppose that’s where the waving began, with our family game of Sweet and Sour, waving to vehicles passing by while we waited for a tow truck.

Our poor car spent four days at the Auburn dealership under the tinkering care of our mechanic, Jim. On Thursday, Jim returned our car to us declaring it “fixed” after replacing the battery and making a major repair on the throttle.

It took only half a mile to realize that although the car was functioning, the instrument panel was not. The speedometer, gas gauge, and temperature gauge all bottomed out. In addition, the turn signals and air conditioning were not working. One more trip to the Auburn dealership failed to fix the issue.

When we arrived back in Pleasanton, we were faced with the dilemma of what to do about the van.

Granted, I couldn’t see how fast I was driving, but that was easily resolved by driving as fast as everyone else. I had been meaning to deal with my road rage issues anyway. Instead of grumbling at the driver driving 35 mph in a 45 mph zone, I would embrace my fellow commuter for her functioning speedometer.

My air conditioning wasn’t working either but I convinced myself that the wind-blown look was the new style, and just rolled my windows down. I would have to invest in more hair bands so that my mid-length locks wouldn’t obscure my vision.

That left one final issue to contend with: the turn signals.

Now, I consider myself a creative individual but this conundrum had me stumped. I considered buying neon poster boards and cutting left and right arrows out of them. My older son would have to travel with me sitting shotgun so that he could be my right-arrow man. When I proposed the idea to him, he wanted to know how much I’d pay him to accompany me. It turns out, I couldn’t afford him.

My husband offered the simple solution — use hand signals. I scoffed at his idea, asking if he even knew which hand signal was left and which one was right. I couldn’t remember the last time I had taken a driving test, and I was sure it was in the driver’s manual. I’m not sure what worried me the most; the fact that I didn’t know the hand signals or that I wasn’t sure other drivers would know what the hand signals were.

Knowing that not using my turn signals meant I was at risk for a ticket, I initially opted taking only right-hand turns. I figured no one uses their right turn signal anyway. This tactic only backfired when I discovered it added 10 minutes to my drive to Dublin to take my preschooler to Mrs. Bev’s Preschool, a small home preschool all three of my children attended.

I added lanes with left-hand turn signals to my “right turn only” plan but quickly realized that none of the four exits out of my neighborhood had a left-hand turn lane.

It wasn’t until I was taking my boys to their martial arts class at Kicks USA that I was finally forced to hang my arm out the window to indicate I was making a right turn.

Just as I was getting ready to turn right onto Ray Street, I looked in the rear view mirror. There sitting behind me, as if challenging the stubborn Italian streak within me, was a Pleasanton motorcycle cop. It took every ounce of humbleness in my bones to stick my arm out and flash my right-hand signal.

As if I didn’t feel foolish enough, the driver in a car passing by the opposite direction stuck his hand out and waved right back at me.

To add insult to injury, it had been awhile since I had done my P90X workout so my arms weren’t as sculpted as I normally would have wanted. As I turned the corner a gust of wind gushed against my lower arm causing it to waggle.

By this time I was feeling humiliated, humbled and extremely out of shape. I returned home, giving poor hubby an ultimatum; either take me shopping for a new car or have the turn signals fixed. Hubby opted for the latter.

Two more visits into the dealership and $2,500 in repairs still did not resolve the blinker or instrument panel issues. I finally was forced to diagnose the problem myself. Ten minutes and several Googled sites later, I found a website in which numerous Dodge owners had similar issues. Fortunately for me, they offered a simple solution having to do with soldering some loose wires in the instrument panel.

The next day the dealership called wanting to replace the “cluster” for $800. I asked the serviceman for his email address, emailed the link to him and told him to do nothing except for what was detailed on the website.

Ninety dollars later, I drove off the dealership’s lot in my Dodge Caravan, my right blinker on and my left arm hanging out the window waving goodbye, lower arm waggle included, to the mechanic who'd said $800 would fix the issues.

My van is still laced in dirt left over from our Griswold vacation earlier this month, but all of its parts are working properly.

Since the rumor is out that columnist Wendy Smith is driving around town waving to cars passing by, I’ve decided to keep using my hand signals. Not only am I getting smiles from unexpecting drivers but the arm waggle has motivated me to do something about my less-than-sculpted body parts.

The current Tata Sky+ HD set top box has an Ethernet port,

An internet subscription movie service along the lines of Netflix in the US may soon be introduced by News Corporation’s Indian satellite TV arm Tata Sky, according to the Hindustan Times.

Talks are reportedly in ‘advanced stages’ for the service, which could see the populous country’s third largest direct to home (DTH) platform offering subscribers unlimited films and TV programmes, streamed over the internet to their PCs, tablets or web-enabled TVs for a monthly fee.

The current Tata Sky+ HD set top box has an Ethernet port, allowing users to connect to the internet and store streamed content, which would help enable deliver the rumoured web-based film service, reportedly set to be finalised in the coming two to three months.

Vikram Mehra, CMO, Tata Sky, has, however, refused to comment on the rumours circulating about his company’s supposed plans to launch a Netflix-type service in India.
Tata Sky already offers its six million plus subscribers a movie on demand option called Showcase, with films shown at pre-ordained times. The beauty of an internet delivered subscription service, however, allows the user to store the film on the hard drive of a set top box and have unlimited access for the period of rental.

Tata Sky – one of India’s six private DTH operators – currently trails in subscriber numbers to Dish TV’s 9 million and Sun TV’s 6.4 million. These pay TV platforms, together with rivals Reliance Digital TV, Airtel Digital and Videocon d2h, now provide over 30 million customers with satellite TV and associated services.

DTH in India has experienced a 108% compound growth rate since Dish TV first launched in 2005, and its subscription base now accounted for 21% of the world’s pay satellite subscriber base at the end of 2010.
